Tessera produces lens assemblies, beam-shaping optics, and custom waveplates for industrial, defense, and laboratory customers. The company was founded in 2018 by two former employees of a hundred-year-old optical house in Rochester, New York, where the founders had spent a combined forty-one years before leaving to build something of their own.
Tessera operates from a single facility in Rochester. The shop is small, the lead times are honest, and the customers come back. About a third of revenue is repeat business from the same dozen accounts.
Barlow seeded Tessera in 2018 and has been the sole institutional investor since.
